Korean Vowels

We have seen Korean vowels and Korean consonants in Learn Korean Lesson 1 – Consonants and Vowels. Korean vowels can be pronounced by itself or in combination with a consonant, but Korean vowels cannot stand alone as a syllable. Let’s Learn 10 Korean basic vowels today. In this Learn Korean – Korean vowels lesson, we will learn how to pronounce and the sequence in writing Korean alphabets.

Korean Monophthong Pronunciation 단모음 발음 [ dan-mo-eum-ba-reum ]

ㅏ [ a ] – as in pasta 아가씨 [ a-ga-ssi ] – Ms 가방 [ ga-bang ] – a bag 사진 [ sa-jin ] – photograph
ㅑ [ ya ] – as in yard 야구 [ ya-gu ] – baseball 야 [ ya ] – hey
ㅓ [ eo ] – as in august 머리 [ meo-ri ] – head 어 [ eo ] – yes 거실 [ geo-sil ] – living room
ㅕ [ yeo ] – as in yearn 여자 [ yeo-ja ] – female 마녀 [ ma-nyeo ] – witch 겨드랑이 [ gyeo-deu-rang-i ] – armpit
ㅗ [ o ]  – as in orange 모자 [ mo-ja ] – hat 코 [ ko ] – nose 고드름 [ go-deu-reum ] – icicle
ㅛ [ yo ] – as in yolk 요리사 [ yo-ri-sa ] – chef 교실 [ kyo-sil ] – classroom 표면 [ pyo-myeon ] – surface
ㅜ [ u ] – as in coo 후추 [ hu-chu ] – black pepper 주방 [ ju-bang ] – kitchen 우주 [ u-ju ] – the universe
ㅠ [ yu ] – as in you 유창하다 [ yu-chang-ha-da ] – to be fluent 규칙 [ kyu-chik ] – rule 휴일 [ hyu-il ] – holiday
ㅡ [ eu ] 크리스마스 [ keu-ri-seu-ma-seu ] – Christmas 으깨다 [ eu-ggae-da ] – to mash 그네 [ geu-ne ] – swing
ㅣ [ i ] – as in teeth 이쑤시개 [ i-ssu-si-gae ] – toothpick 이빨 [ i-bbal ] – teeth 기침 [ gi-chim ] – cough
