When you are sick, you go to a hospital of Western medicine, right? But in Korea, there are other kinds of hospitals which practice Oriental medicine. Long before Western medicine was introduce into this land, Oriental medicine, which originated from China, was the sole medical service available in old Korea.

Unlike the doctors of general hospitals, Oriental medicine physicians do not take X-rays nor perform surgery. They determine the symptoms by feeling the patient’s pulse and then give an appropriate diagnosis for the patient.

In Oriental medical clinics, the physicians practice acupuncture. Acupuncture is a therapy that uses the insertion of tiny thread-like needles ( made of metals such as gold, silver, or white gold ) into the skin. By stimulationg appropriate acupuncture points, pain is eased and health is restored.

They use the herbal remedies which were developed in China 4000 years ago and imported to Korea during the early Shilla Dynasty. Oriental medicine uses animal parts, plants, minerals and other natural substances. Most of them are herbs. The herbs may be taken in raw formulas prescribed on the ground of herbal pharmacopoeia.

Thanks to the development of modern medicine, many diseases have been conquered. it is also true that Oriental medicine has made a good contribution to solving some problems that Western medicine is unable to solve. Koreans have a good opportunity to make the best use of combining these two–Western and Oriental medicine. If you ever have a chance to visit an Oriental medical clinic, you will be able to see first hand this wondrous medicine.
